Who would like to see football return to it's roots.?

I've come to believe that the modern sport produces players who are way to specialized -- an over-developed group of one-trick ponies. It makes me want to return to the old days, when players played on both sides of the ball, when you only dressed 33 (or fewer) men for a match, kickers actually had to make tackles and run with the ball, and once you came off the field, you stayed off for the rest of the half. It would encourage young players to be fitter, curb steroid use as the extra size would be a liability, produce better all-round athletes, and force coaches to make some real (and hard) decisions about their substitutions. Frankly, I think it would be a much better game. Anyone feel the same?

And while they are at it, move the hash marks back towards the sidelines -- who says the game can only be played in the middle of the field?

Update:

Edit@Mel Kiper Jr. -- yeah, the nature of QBing would change. But it would also work to the advantage of the real athletes -- the ones who used to be called "triple threats" because they could kick, run and throw the ball. Like Jim Thorpe. Or in the modern era, a player like Doug Flutie, rather than be hamstrung by the need to stay in the pocket, could really cut loose.

If we did that we would have missed out on a lot of great QBs. They can throw the ball and that is about it. Not to mention you get Tom Brady or Peyton Manning playing D they other team will be running plays in their direction to put plenty of hits on them. Who wants to see the Broncos VS Pats with both backup QBs playing? NO ONE.

Not so much the ol' leather heads but from the the late 90's to end of LT's career were probably the best football era

    Me.

I hate the new 35 yard-line kickoff, the stupid tackling rules.

Trying to make the games safe has ruined the fun for me.

Sure take a few precautions, but not this much.

I think they should bring back the leather helmets, they used to be OK, and these new helmets are heavy and hot.
