Can I open a checking account if I am currently unemployed?

I am filling out my checking account information and it asks a lot of employment questions. I don't see why it would matter since I am putting thousands of dollars into an account at there bank.

You do not need a job to get a checking account.,

    Why are they asking this?

So the teller can start bombarding you with loan offers and credit card offers if you ever see her (that's an opinion).

I would put N/A for not applicable (since it is not applicable).

Can you imagine if you needed a job to open a checking account?

    What would retired people do?

Yes you can....I opened up my first checking account at 14, so job status is meaningless. Just because they are asking for job info DOES NOT mean its a requirement.
