In need of artistic instruction!?

I have always had natural artistic ability. Especially with pen and pencil. However, I never received any kind of instruction in technique or medium. I would like to learn but I don't want to go back to school. Does any one know of some good too excellent instructional books that I might use. Please only art teachers and artists. I know there are books to be found online. I want to hear from people who have actually used them.

As much as I'd like to help you, the request is kind of wide open. There's hundreds upon thousands of art books out there that can help those pursuing pen and pencil, or more, but there's not really one catchall book that will help you on its own, or even a small series of books. (And if they say they are, they're probably lying.) Since you could enjoy practically any art book out there, it's very hard to pick just what books you'll find useful!

Honestly, I think your best solution would be to go to a Library and look through the art section. Skim through and find which topics interest you, because the books you like may be a "How to" book, or they could be a study on a particular style of art, or even just a collection of works by a particular artist. Either way, they can all be just as useful. Get a few out and try to narrow down what you want to work on.

As for my own personal suggestions to you, avoid books that are just a big collection of images and step by step processes for how to draw those images, like... basically everything by Christopher Hart. All that's doing is encouraging you to copy someone else's drawing. Go for something that teaches you the techniques themselves.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Mark Crilley is a really great teacher. Look him up on youtube! :)
