Can I improve my strength without incapacitating myself?

I am interested in gaining a small amount of strength and tone in my arms, but if I completely wreck myself lifting, I find that in the following days my arms are shaky and handwriting is difficult, which I can't really afford. Is it possible to gain strength at a acceptable rate by training at a level that won't leave my arms shaky the next day? Any suggestions or information would be appreciated.

I starred this hoping that someone who has heard of this will answer. I've never heard of these kinds of shakes.

I have found the following with curling: If I don't exercise for a while (say, 6 months) and then go back, my arms will always feel sore the next day (even if I do much less weight than before). This takes about a week to recover from. But then after a week or two it feels better, and my arms do not get sore again after curling. I am guessing that your shakes will go away after you establish a regular habit of exercise. But I'm not sure if you are starting again after a long hiatus, or if this issue is something different.
