Should the Redskins change their name?
It's becoming quite the debate nationally. Some feel the name "Redskins" is derogatory and offensive, and the franchise should change it. Others feel it is political correctness overkill, and tradition shouldn't be messed with. So I thought I'd ask Y!A. Should they change their name? Why or why not?

specific it fairly is offensive. yet offensive to who? The community human beings who we've been kicking around for hundreds of years, and are just about non-existent at the instant? Why would desire to we now, after the certainty, abruptly say "Oops, our undesirable, here we will exchange the call of a soccer team to make it as much as you." The Redskins have had their call for an prolonged time, changing it now won't flow down in historic previous as a landmark interior the civil rights flow, it's going to easily piss off incredibly some Redskins followers.

Yes it's offensive. But offensive to who? The native americans who we've been kicking around for hundreds of years, and are practically non-existent today? Why should we now, after the fact, suddenly say "Oops, our bad, here we'll change the name of a football team to make it up to you."
The Redskins have had their name for a long time, changing it now won't go down in history as a landmark in the civil rights movement, it'll just piss off a lot of Redskins fans.

No. Why would the name Redskins be racist now, and not all these years that have gone past?
Plus, the name is meant to be honorary, not insulting. Why would a team want to call themselves a derogatory name?
To me, the name conjures images of how brave and fierce Native American warriors were in combat.

Is describing a person as "black" or "white" offensive??
The term "redskins' was a way Indians were described in the past due to the colour of their skin, it is not intended to be offensive at all

the name should change if the law has been broken with regard to discrimination or harrassment.Failing that..any individual or group can pursue a complaint as a civil matter and litigate accordingly. The test should be if a reasonable person under normal circumstances could presume that a person or group of people who are native..would suffer as a result of using the term"Redskin" to name a football team.Correspondingly..a case could be made that lyrics deemed to be gloryifying rape or the abuse of woman..or anti-gay sentiment..in rape music should be treated as harmfull to woman and gay people. As well a commonly used term to identify black men.."N"..could be included in this argument. When the pendulum of censorship swings..it bangs into many things
