My knitting pattern starts a row with a YON [yarn over needle]. How do you do this?

Row 1: YON, K3

Row 2: YON, K4

Update:

I know what a yarn over is. I am wondering how you START a row this way. I though you always start with a K or P and then you can do a YO.

Wrap the yarn around the right hand needle to make an extra stitch.
