Does Foil work to keep out the heat?

I have bad severe Asthma, and the weather for casted a heat wave, and I am going to fight to keep my home cool. This is why I am asking because several people have told me foil works to keep the heat out.

If I put foil (The shiny side facing the outside) in my window, will it reflect the heat back outside to keep my home cooler?

10 points issued for the best answer Thanks

Yes, foil does keep the heat out. I have foil installed in my attic and it somehow helps to deflect the heat. Without it, the heat from the room will surely penetrate inside. For your windows, I suggest you put a dark tint to filter the amount of light coming into your room. This will allow you to see through the glass panes so you can see the view from the outside.

Yes reflective foil will work. In order to be considered a radiant barrier and be able to reflect heat, products need to be at least 93% reflective. There are ASTM tests that are done to ensure this reflectivity for products designed for this.

If the material you are using is in fact reflective insulation, it will do an excellent job blocking heat. Aluminum foil and other household products that are not as reflective will not work as well.

You keep the foil side to whatever side you want to reflect heat. In your case it is outwards towards the sun.

You need a window fitted with a fan to pull hot air out.. creating cross ventilation..

or an attic fan,. pulling heat out from the ceiling...or a window unit Air Conditioner.

You can cook a potato with foil wrapped around it, so I guess no.
