How much Iodine do I need per day?

I'm 15 and I heard and read in many places that many people are not getting efficient amounts of iodine and I wanted to pick some up at the Vitamin Shop and I just wanted to know how much Iodine is considered efficient per day. (I also heard that Iodine can help prevent cancer along with a balanced diet.)

No, it doesn't prevent cancer. You have to be careful what you read.

You need 150 mcg's of iodine a day.

If you are concerned about iodine, a couple servings a week of seaweed, or ocean seafood, is a safer alternative.

Iodine was added to salt in 1933 to help the massive amounts of iodine deficiency in Midwest america, where goiter was rampant. Goiter is what happens when a person doesn't get enough iodine, it causes the thyroid to swell huge. Like this

You don't see people with goiter, because the amount of iodized salt in the American diet is sufficient to prevent that disorder. In 1933, the addition of iodine to salt was considered a public health victory. Goiter is still common in parts of Latin America and Asia where iodine rich foods are scarce.

Between you and me, I wouldn't worry about such things.

It is wise to check multiple sources, however, sufficient iodine might just prevent cancer. "Iodine actually induces apoptosis as well, meaning it causes cancer cells to self-destruct. Dr. Jorge Flechas, MD is adamant that absence of iodine in a cell is what causes cancer, and statistics tend to support this view.".
