Why Do Some Hostels Require A Passport From Born American Citizens?

Ok I'm planning a trip to Los Angeles in mid october this year,I have already bought the plane ticket via united airlines.Anyway I booked a hostel on venice beach online and before I made the reservation I read the fine print but I first didn't see the part about a passport being required from a us citizen until later and I called them to conform the passport situation,so I cancelled it and booked a hostel in downtown la.By the way Im 33 years old and from texas and I stay in virginia, also I stayed at a hostel in nyc just 4 weeks ago there was no passport requirement.I know there is a lot of cases where people are falsifying there citizenship to stay here in america but this is a little too much.

They aren't asking for a passport because you are "falsifying your American citizenship".

= they could careless what country you are from. Or that you are from Texas and you moved to Virginia

They want a passport because it's much more likely to have your valid information and they want to know who is really staying at the hostel.

    - it's a private hostel. they can make their own rules.

Actually, they want to see your passport to make sure you're a traveler, and not looking to become a resident of LA. Hostels are the cheapest way to stay. They don't want people shacking up in their place, making it a residence.
