Have Jehovah's Witnesses received any "new light" on when the 144,000 will be sealed?

There has been so much "new light" recently, it's hard to keep up. The 15 July 2013 study Watchtower is full of it. As the Great Tribulation draws ever closer, I wondered if the Governing Body has issued an update on when the number of the 144,000 will be sealed. Here is the background:

In 1968 the Society said “the fish had been fished and the number was completed during the period 1931-1935.” (Memorial partakers 11,550 in 1965)

In 1996 the Society said “There is every reason to believe that the number of anointed ones will continue to decline as advanced age and unforeseen occurrences end their earthly lives." (Memorial partakers 8,645 in 1995)

In 1999 the Society said “This call was terminated between the years 1931-1935.”

In 2000 the Society said "Likely the full number of spiritual Israel, that "little flock" of Kingdom heirs, has been selected." (Memorial partakers 8,755 in 1999)

In 2007 the Society said “Thus, it appears that we cannot set a specific date for when the calling of Christians to the heavenly hope ends.” (Memorial partakers 9,105 in 2007)

As of 2012, the number of memorial partakers has gone up to 12,604.

Any insights into why the numbers continue to increase would be useful.

Update:

I do so hope that HEAVENly EYES will respond, and thank you for giving this question a star.

Update 2:

I'm sorry I wasn't able to see the answer given by PraiseJahYouPeople. She must have been very upset because she has now blocked me.

Resounding silence from the Witnesses. Can't they just confirm whether this statement is still true? "Thus, it appears that we cannot set a specific date for when the calling of Christians to the heavenly hope ends." (Watchtower 1 May 2007, page 31)

Update 3:

Simon, my sincere apologies. You are the only Witness who has answered and I thank you. I appreciate that not every person partaking of the emblems will be of the anointed class - but how come their numbers have increased by almost 50% since 2005 when 8,524 persons partook?

You say the numbers increasing has no significant bearing on what the Society has said in the past about the number of the 144,000 being sealed. Simon, my parents were told the number had been sealed way back in the mid 1930's! Armageddon was supposed to be imminent back then. The Society has always maintained the numbers of the anointed would DECREASE the closer we got to Armageddon. So why are the numbers INCREASING?

Update 4:

In 15 months' time, it will be 100 years since Jesus is supposed to have started ruling (invisibly) from heaven. All the "new light" streaming out of Bethel is preparing the ground for a major shift within the organisation. The Governing Body must point everyone forward to the coming Great Tribulation, which precedes Armageddon. 1914 will have to be dropped, because nothing has hap pend in almost 100 years, proving conclusively that everything the Witnesses believe about the significance of October 1914 is wrong. The Governing Body is getting the spade-work done now to prepare everyone for the earth-shattering news that Jesus Christ did NOT start ruling from heaven (invisibly) in 1914. Why are Jehovah's Witnesses unable to see what the Governing Body is doing?

I think the key expression is "memorial partakers". You are talking like its an established fact amoung jw's that all these partakers ARE genuine members of the 144,000. That simply isn't the case. No one knows for certain if EVERY partaker is definitely of the anointed class. None of the articles contradict each other. The simply point out that those who are of the anointed are likely to have been chosen. The number of "partakers" going up has no significant bearing on those statements.

*edit* "resounding silence"? I guess you chose to ignore my answer as it addressed the specifics of your question.

Revelation 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.2 Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: 3 “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.”

This clearly shows that none of the 144000 have died to this time, they are all still alive on earth together in need of protection from the coming troubles.

The JW's would have you believe these 144000 are all JW's and these people will rule from heaven as kings with Christ. Yet they claim that all the detailed descriptions of the 144000 are just symbolic. Therefore they want you to believe there are 12000 symbolic men from 12 symbolic tribes which make up 144000 literal people?????

I can only assume that they will agree with 12 crates each containing 12000 apples equals 144000 oranges.

They also use some other logic that as the number of 144000 is a definite number and the Great Crowd is not a definite number the 144,000 is logically a literal number, yet when you show that 12 tribes of 12000 in each tribe are also definite numbers they reject their logic only in that part of the equation.

The society understood in 1935 that the number of the 144000 still alive would equate to the total number of 144000 and the number would then start to die off, but as the number has continued to grow and proved there are many claiming a false situation [including the society] they needed to change their teachings on the matter again, then again.

Today they blame the extra numbers on people just imaging they are of the 144000 just like the 250000 that were part of the 144000 before them.

Next thing you know they will be siting a parable as a direction for them to be some sort of faithful slave that gives God's word as needed but gets it wrong all the time.

The most astounding 'new light' is the complete abandoning of their 'faithful and discreet slave class' doctrine. For almost 100 years the Watchtower taught that Jesus parable of the 'faithful slave' applied to the entire remnant of the 144,000 still alive on earth. And it was this remnant of thousands of anointed christians that were the actual 'faithful and discreet slave' that would feed the domestics. Or as the Watchtower interprets the parable to mean: all the information published in Watchtower literature "proper food" emanated from this remnant class of people.

The current governing body members could never give a serious answer as to, why if this vast world wide class of 'faithful slave' was not ever consulted or even petitioned for 'food' and only a select few men in New York, ie:Bethel headquarters, ever in those 100 years of 'truth' were the only ones writing and feeding. So these young gb members have now changed the doctrine to make a meager attempt as addressing what everyone knew to be one of the most flagrant religious doctrinal sham ever pulled over the eyes of adherent's.

At least now they are admitting how silly that doctrine was, when anyone who observed the actual functioning of the so-called faithful slave, knew what the REAL truth was, even if they were want not to admit it.

To bad it took them 100 years to admit the vast deception!

I can't believe the answer that PraiseJahYouPeople gave you. This is so far from being a Christian answer. Name calling, threats but no answer to the question. You ask a legitimate question and give proper background and then he/she answers you like this. If this is their example of their religion, I am so glad I am not in it.

For your question, I am not a JW and never have been nor will I ever be one, so I can't answer for them but if history can speak for them if they have not received an update, they will. This religion does not even resemble itself for when it first started. For an organization that is supposedly chosen By God and being led by the Holy Spirit or I should say holy spirit their history is so full of mistakes, and redo's and new light, old light, new truths, old truths... I think they do have new light insomuch as they have had so many flip flops and changes. Their differences are as different as day and night within their own doctrines. This is where I think they get their new light from, not from the Bible but by their own mistakes, which are so many.

Wow, this is a really good question. I've thought about this throughout the last few years, and it makes no sense to me. I can't understand how this is such a unified religion, yet they change their doctrine every year.

Looks like a lot of resurrected witnesses will be very divided between what they died believing as 'truth', and what they'll be resurrected into as 'truth'. Irony.

I have some light. Revelation 7

    The 144,000

4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

5 from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand,

6 from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand,

7 from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand,

8 from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand,

from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

A missionary corps of redeemed Jews who are instrumental in the salvation of many Jews and Gentiles during the Tribulation (vv. 9-17). They will be the firstfruits of a new redeemed Israel (v.4, Zech. 12:10). Finally, Israel will be the witness nation she refused to be in the OT.

By sovereign election, God will seal 12000 from each of the 12 tribes, promising His protection while they accomplish their mission.

I think I was telling them that the 144, 000 wouldn't be apparent until Israel was reconstituted, not just with the Jews of the southern kingdom, but also with the northern tribes (Ezekiel 37, Revelation 12). But I don't think they want that knowledge.

They are misled, nothing to that Their hope should be in Jesus him only. For he said " I am the way the truth and the light."

There are 100 things JWs can't cogently explain about their false prophecies

    and doctrinal scandals .

This harmful cult has been disproved by history over and over .

Its hilarious they are just making things up as they go along .

    Its so easy to see.

Just step back from it . Clear your head . Engage critical thinking skills .
