1st fight, what the hell, has this ever happend to anyone?

I never thought I would be in a fight as I am 38 and usually stick to places I like. Today, I went to the beach for 4th of July. While I walked with a few friends a bum just threw a punch at me. I have no idea of how but i gues that somehow I must have seen this and by the time I realized what happened, I had done the 1st two moves from Pinan Shodan. I had blocked his punch then slammed his arm down. That happened fast but then I saw my arm punch and I stopped it before it hit his jaw. I do not practice stopping anymore so was surprised that I could. A cop handcuffed me while his partner asked around what happend. People said that the bum had swung at me and the bum said that he was just playing and did not intend any harm. what felt like a few hours later the cop did a sobriety test and told me that if he wanted to he could arrest me for being "Wet" I was not even at a legal limit of drunk (and was nowhere near my car). I am still shaking what the hell?

Update:

@ Alexander

I was not booked just held in the car for a while

@Akban

It is almost like cops don't think but just try to take everyone to jail before getting any facts. I was lucky that there were a lot of people who saw what happened.

@Kaleb

I Think powerball might be a good idea

    The bum did what looked EXACTLY like a punch. Also, it's common logic that you shouldn't throw what looks exactly like a punch to a random stranger, because the random stranger will assume it's a punch. You had PERFECT reason to believe that he was trying to punch you. That bum probably did a REAL punch, but when he failed (because most people aren't martial artists), he made up the BS excuse that he was just, "playing around," when in reality, he just failed miserably and tried to cover up for it.

    Also, if you didn't drink at all, that cop couldn't arrest you for anything drunk-related; he was just trying to sound like a macho man because it was his time of the month.

    What happened? You just maxed out on all the bad luck a person could ever have in their lifetime. Go, buy as many lottery tickets as you can!

    shaking after a fight is normal.

    participating in a fight, whether you start it or not, can be seen as aggression and they can take you in. The alcohol stuff is just there as the'll try to use whatever then can against you.

    The problem with practising martial arts is that you really condition your reflexes, so against a bum a counter attack can be very much over the top. I remember pinan to be the equivalent of heian nidan in shotokan, which I practised, and that has lots of neck striking action going on in the bunkai. Neck striking never goes well in public so I can understand why you've been booked.

    So long story short: You'll get over it and experience will make you wiser. Next time, block more, hit less (yeah.. easier said than done).

    Good luck on the unnecessary police work being done to do.

    Shaking is normal.

    Last yr while getting groceries the guy in front of me started beating up the cashier bc the lady told him he didn't have enough money for his beer. I tried to pull him off, but he kinda back elbowed me in the jaw. So I got him in a rear naked choke and put him to sleep. Luckily that was all I had to do bc he was big man. Cops showed up and almost took me to jail! I was shaking for like 2 hours or something and I felt sick.

    So it's normal I guess. It's probably the initial adrenaline rush wearing off.

    Sorry about what happened and I'm glad you are OK.

    Tee hee, yes, some cops are like that.

    in most places you can get a ticket for public drunkenness. unless you do something stupid to get arrested as well.

    cops dont always tell the truth and some are on power trips. and will just arrest you because they can.

    im not sure which the case is in your situation

    as for why you didnt follow through with the technique that is more likely from your training, you need to look at what you are doing in your training more closely

    Well that wasn't really a fight, but if the bum was drunk, or just crazy, its not hard to block a punch. So, no offense, but its not that impressive. But hey, atleast you walked away looking like a badass to your friends.
