Bad head gasket or needed radiator flush ?

I own a 2001 Nissan maxima, I just recently bought it from trust worthy person and said car never overheated, I drive the car in new Mexico where its hot and the car doesn't overheat at all , temperature stays where it needs to. The car drives more than great and does not fail. Oil was old so I took it to meineke for a change(oil was old black with no indication of antifreeze or water mixed with it on dipstick) I noticed on the radiator reservoir the water looked dirty with some blackish sludge not brown, I checked the radiator feed neck and found a small amount of sludge but with clear water not antifreeze. So at meineke they told me I had a bad head gasket, I honestly think the radiator hasn't been flushed in a while, so could it be a head gasket or should I just flush the cooling systems first ? Please help !

I think your missing the whole point here, old coolant or not, where did the sludge come from, it doesn't appear over time by magic. There is no one way for a head gasket to fail, you can get coolant in the oil, or burn it up, you can get oil in the coolant. Sounds like the head gasket is just starting to fail.

Trustworthy person or not, your head gasket is 12 years old, why was there clear water than a proper coolant in your cars radiator ? Do you have steam (light white smoke) exiting the exhaust ?
