What is the public restroom law in USA?

I had to use the bathroom and went into a sub sandwich shop (you know the name) and the worker there screamed at me that the toilet was for customers ONLY so i had to leave. And there was no where that I could use a toilet without buying somthing! and it left me wondering.. since there are no public toilets anymore, and stores and restuarants seem to forbid public use without purchase, what is the law in the USA about this? what is a person expecited to do? Public urination is totaly ilegal, so are people expected to just go in there pants? what is the law? what are we expected to do? Does the law really say we must either go in our pants or pay at a store?

Most places like shopping malls have public restrooms. Otherwise the average shops on the side of the road have no obligation to let you use their restroom. They're not funded by the public, and when you don't so much as buy a $1 soda, you're just taking from them. Gas stations will sometimes make themselves more available. Places like public parks will also usually have public restrooms.

Otherwise you're expected to be an adult and plan your trip accordingly. And if you have to buy a drink someplace to use the restroom, that's the way it goes. If wherever you live needs more public restrooms in some location, contact your local representative -- and get ready to pay for them from your taxes instead of by paying a buck for a soft drink every now and then.

There is no national law. It is a city by city thing mostly. There may be a few state laws. But in general it should be up to the toilet owner.

I don't think there's some law upon this but I may be wrong...

technically they don't want to keep their paying customers waiting to use the restroom due to non paying customers using the facilities. Also most places don't want homeless people using the facilities as refuge.

Source(s): used many restrooms that said "Customer use only" with and without being a patron

There are public toilets you just need to know where they are. You can ask store owners nicely to use their bathrooms rather than just walking in like you own the place.

the law is that a private business owns the restroom, it is not publicly owned. They make the rules about who can or cannot use them.

Walmart is always the common option, they are everywhere. Otherwise.. you need to plan your trips, or if you can't plan, it may be time to buy depends.
