It's illegal to drink in public, yet im allowed to drink at public venues?

I was cited for having a beer on the sidewalk a few blocks from the convention center parking lot where i bought it, which is public property. when is it legal/illegal to drink in public?

if it wasn't brown bagged then yes it is illegal. In fact some businesses have a sign that states no alchohol within "insert certain amount of feet" in which you can't drink alchohol within that footage of the business. I don't know where you are so I'm not sure of your laws I live in vegas so we are sort of leniant but also the cop might have just been a douche with nothing better to do than give you a citation.

The Convention center isn't a "public" venue it is a private venture that has an onsite liquor license this means they can sell liquor onsite and their patrons can drink it onsite. The moment you step onto actual public property you can be cited for drinking in public. The reason you can drink on Convention center property is they have event staff to control drunken unruly patron (like most bars do). Get a drink at a side walk cafe and try to leave the property with your drink that's not even legal in Key West anymore.

It may not be illegal, but you should be careful about being alone on such nights, there may be some dangerous characters around, if you know what I mean, any thing could happen, I'd say you would be lucky if a cop did tell you to move and get home quickly.

Because it leads to peeing in public, acting disorderly in public, and littering.

Brick and mortar establishments pay taxes, employ workers, and provide services.

You drinking on the sidewalk is just a drain on society.

It's illegal; however, if you want to make it sort of legal, drink like a hobo, just wrap the bottle with a black bag or something like that.

The venues must be properly licensed to sell booze and let people drink.
