I've seen department stores organized by brand; I was wondering if anyone actually shopped like that.

Of course many people do. Lets say that you usually drink Tequila, when your Tequila at home runs out, are you gonna go buy the alternate of Tequila or are you gonna go to the Tequila and get the same one that you had?
AND organized by brand has many many functions... its marketing movement there.... one example is to avoid confusion... if you go to Food Lion often to buy food, you familiar with the things that you buy...I mean...know where they are at... therefore, you can go directly to that section and get what you need...
ALSO... many people have trusted brand in their mind... such as Tylenol... many people trust it and believe it has great quality and so on...
