My garter snake has cloudy blue eyes and is acting weird?!?

I'm worried about him. I've had pet snakes since I was a little girl, and I'm familiar with them, but I'm stumped. Yesterday morning my garter snake had cloudy blue eyes. I thought that this was a sign that the snake was going to shed his skin soon, but he hasn't yet. He usually layes out in his cage because he loves his light, but for the last 2 days he's been under his log hiding. He is super tame and has let me hold him for hours while I do homework, but last night when I was holding him he held his mouth open. He didn't bite me or anything, it was just open, and it concerned me. Is he okay? Should I take him to the vet or am I over reacting?

Update:

His appetite is great...as usual. lol I fed him about 3 days ago and he ate fine...so I'm not worried about that. I'm not sure what his shedding routine is...just seems kinda random to me so I'm not sure.

Upon reading this, my first instinct was that he was getting ready to shed but since his behavior is a little strange I wasn't quite sure. I think the best bet is to watch him carefully if he doesn't get any better bring him in to see the vet. I don't think your over reacting it's naturally to be concerned about your pets.

he's probably shedding - snakes can get a little weird during their shed cycles, and often will hide / be aggressive.

for the mouth opening, it could be weird behaviour or a respiratory infection. keep an eye on him and if he starts wheezing, you see mucus in his mouth/nose, or he holds his head up straight for a long period of time, you should definitely take him to a vet.

Awh I want a snake I love them:

Okay so is it his time to shed? If so give it a few more days and if he hasn't shedded take him to a vet. If not take him to the vet asap because he sounds sick. Is he eating well? Is he sleeping well? If these are no's I suggest you take him asap regardless of shedding time. Good luck with your snake!

    Sincerely, Simon. xoxox
