This is a common problem with buttons stopping working, and sticking going weird, it usually happens after the controller has had a fall. One theory is that it screws with the 6 axis sensors, and messes the controller up in general. But theirs a simple, almost caveman type solution, which works for a lot of people experiencing random faults like this with the dual shock 3. Find a hard object (I used the metal post on my bed., and sharply hit the back of the controller against it( the middle part of it, since that's where the main board is). Now when I say sharply, I don't mean slam it in to it multiple times until you're left holding broken plastic. Once, hard(ish) should suffice, but gentle taps won't solve the problem.
