Assassin's Creed series plot?

I've played the first one, a little of the beginning of 2 and saw the beginning of 3. It explains a lot of it in 3. Am I missing much if I just skip the rest of 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations? I mean the modern plotline. Do we meet his father in the earlier ones? Or the ancient goddess lady?

If it's the modern plot-line you want, all of them are important except from Revelations; which only reveals Desmond's life before being captured by Abstergo......which is not important (but interesting).

However, Revelations is a must if you want to follow the ancestor's plot, it show a lot about Ezio and Altair's life.

I think that the 2 games that you need to play is Assassins creed 1 and 3. AC1 revolves allot around Desmond and the assassin + Templar ethical conflict (my favorite game in the series). AC3 (My least favorite game in the series) sums up all the previous games in relation to Desmond. I still recommend playing ALL of them. The AC3 intro and ending is all you really need to see.
