Is it wise to carry this in luggage?

We're travelling to the United States to attend the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. We want to take some things for our costumes, including an Original series Hand Phaser (which of course looks a lot like a handgun).

I am just wondering what is the best way carry this item. Should we pack it in our checked baggage (I'm concerned that it may cause the bag to be delayed because of Customs wanting to check it) or should we carry in our hand luggage, so that it can be easily seen as being plastic, but risk causing concern for security officers?

Any ideas would be helpful.

A lot of bag handlers are crooks and steal from checked bags. So beware of putting anything anything you value in your checked luggage.

Leave your phaser at home. You do not need the attention, especially at the risk of confiscation. In checked bags, they will most likely open your bags, so don't lock it.

The TSA prohibits plastic replicas of guns in Carry On, so checked only. I am not sure about your country's security rules.

I wouldnt try to take it in your carry-on. A fake gun can still cause alarm for a flight crew.

I have traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Hong Kong, and Nepal, and the worst, rudest airport security people Ive encountered are the ones in the US. And Im a white guy who was born here in the US and never lived anywhere else!

Checked baggage only. You carry that in your handbag they will confiscate it real weapon or not. My uncle brought back home a REAL sword from Cambodia as a gift from his In-laws.

    Kudos, I like cosplay =)

Carry it in your hand luggage where you can easily declare it and stay with it (otherwise risk it being x-rayed as a threat).

Don't worry, airports ACTUALLY check and clear legitimate passengers with REAL firearms quite regularly - your toys will be OK.
