Parents are getting sued?

Former Management Company that my parents rented a town house from in London, Ontario wants to sue for $2500 (NOT unpaid rent). We now live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Somehow they found our address! It's not in the WhitePages yet or anywhere online – How could they have found it?

Parents stated they couldn't afford to pay the amount owing or do payments. So last time the Management Company’s collections officer sent a letter (middle of this month), she said they would take it to court if they don’t pay.

My parents own the house that we live in. They have a HUGE loan on it. My mom owns a car free & clear – Which is worth about $17K-18K. Only reason they could afford this is because my mom received an inheritance..but no longer has any more of the money. They have about $250K in debt from the loan they owe for their house & credit cards. My parent's ONLY income is my dad's military pension & his disability pension -- I heard they're not allowed to collect that type of income though…but my mom still wants to switch to another bank, should she?

Now, if they can't take money from their bank account, I've heard they can put a lien on my parent's house? Can they this do so if my parents owe well over $240K on it?

How likely are they to be able to take away my mom's car? It’s their only way of getting around and my dad is handicap. My mom was going to have the car signed over to myself before they get sued, but it was already “gifted” once this year to my mom (long story) and Manitoba Public Insurance says you’re only allowed to gift the same car once in a year.

Update:

Candy G,

The money is for "damages" from mould and high humidity levels. All the units had this problem, but ours was "worse." We're not trying to hide anything, only trying to protect ourselves from something that isn't right and many agree. So don't call her dumb or naive.

She never owed this money until AFTER she bought the new house and we moved, which is why the inheritance is gone.

And from what I've heard pensions are exempt from judgements and I've researched this.

If your mother thinks she can hide stuff from these people she is really naive or really dumb.............they can put a lien on her property AND any of her bank accounts........Your dads pension is not untouchable either.

What does she owe them for, if it is not unpaid rent how come she owes them so much.

Seems a shame that she saw fit to spend the inheritance that she got and not actually pay what she owed..........

EDIT That is different.............a mould issue especially if your parents can prove that they told them about it and they did their best to keep it down surely is NOT your parents fault...........especially if all the other units had the same problem...........sounds like the home owners wants your parents to pay for what is the buildings issue...........
