Horse feed wanting to improve!!?

Hello, so I have a QH gelding whom I love dearly. I have owned him for a little over a year now. He is prone to founder so I will not be giving him hard feeds during spring, which is coming up soon (September). But once spring is over I will need to supplement him again as our summers are extremely hot and dry and we're left with very poor quality grass, although there's usually LOTS of it.

I currently feed him:

2 scoops of wheaten chaff

1 scoop Hygain Ice pellets

2 cups of Speedi-Beet

This is the scoop I'm talking about: http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://newm...

Supplements

2 tablespoons salt

100ml apple cider vinegar

The recommended dose of Equilibrium for his weight

Dolomite

He gets this feed 5 times a week.

Is there anything I can do to improve his diet. I'd like to be able to feed him often during spring and what I'm currently feeding him is all fine for founder horses, does anyone think it would be okay for him to have a hard feed during spring or should I just watch his weight?

This horse is turned out 24/7 I won't consider stabling him. He is muzzled during the day in spring and yarded a couple times a week.

He is currently getting one flake of grass hay in the morning and 1 flake of meadow mixed with clover hay in the evening.

His weight is okay at the moment, seeing as we still have more than a full month of winter left I'm expecting him to drop more weight, but so far he's looking great.

Please no rude comments or the classic "how much are you feeding him, you need to weigh it" he's a horse I'm not going to weigh his food, he gets the same feed all the time it's not like I give him heaps one day and barely nothing the next day.

Thanks in advance!!! :)

The beets are usually used for weight gain because they are high in sugar which I would not feed a horse unless he had a problem keeping weight on, I feed all my horses a 12% protein all purpose pellett and in the 40 years I have fed pellets have never seen a horse founder off them and they maintain their weight well.

Im sorry if this doesn't quiet answer your question but I think you are trying to figure out how to keep your horse fat during summer time? In the winter time in Texas we always have trouble with keeping weight on my horses... We were feedin two scoop of 12-8 pellets, beet pulp, and sweet feed... Yet our horses still weren't gaining... We found the stuff called rice bran... They have it in powder form and in pellet form... Since your horse colics I would feed powder form :) all though I'm not sure where your from but I September it's fall here :) just look up rice bran powder for horses (sorry I don't know how to get links on here... Computer aren't my thing lol) but we feed just one cup... As in like a measuring cup. We just put it in their feed and mix it up so all the powder isn't it one spot... It has kept our horses fat! And it helps their coat makes it really shiny! I bought a horse and his mane was only 2 inches long and and he was on the slimy side... It fattened him up and his mane is about 6 inches long (only had him for a year!) all from rice bran! Now as for feeding hard feed to your horse I wouldn't take any chances as to where your horse could colic from it... And if it happened while you weren't home to catch it... Lost a very special horse because of this:( so just stick to what you have:) and as he fattens up you won't have to feed as much to him ;) I'm sorry if this doesn't quiet answer your question as I'm only 14 and don't know all the stuff that adults would know who have been into horses all their life! :) I hope this helped you some what!

You are looking for a good grain to feed cavalor grain is my favorite they have a lot of options for diets and the grains are packed with all types of supplements for your horses needs. If you are looking for just a roughage grain try your local feed store or talk to a local feed representative! Hope this helps
