Severe edema can be dangerous, but also the cause of the severe edema can be dangerous. There is a wide range of diseases which can cause severe edema. To name a few: heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure, allergic reaction, medication side effect, and infection. These conditions which cause severe edema can be serious.

However, regardless of cause, severe edema is dangerous if treated wrong. Edema is basically water in your skin, which is why it swells up. The water in your bloodstream goes into your skin, so you feel dehyrated and drink water. The water you drink eventually goes into your bloodstream. However, now you have lots of water in your bloodstream AND in your skin. If the cause of edema is fixed, the water in your skin quickly goes back into your bloodstream. What's the problem with that? Now you have a ton of water in your blood stream, you have fluid overload. Your blood pressure is probably 200/100, heart rate is very fast and bounding, the fluid may go into your lungs and cause difficulty breathing.

So yes, severe edema can be dangerous if not managed appropriately.
