Looking for a certain type of bicycle?
I used to have a Raleigh SC30. Actually I still have it but it was damaged when a fallen tree from Hurricane Sandy took out my shed last year.
Now that my knee has recovered I need to take up biking again. I really liked the SC30 but Raleigh no longer makes the SC30. Does anyone know what bike Raleigh makes that's similar to the SC30?
@John - I tried that. All of the shops listed in my area as being a Raleigh dealer don't actually have Raleigh bikes in stock. They sell other brands (and none of them come close) and they *can* order one for me...
...but I get the impression that they're not overly willing to help me since I'm not buying the bikes that they carry in stock.
@Additional - First of all I didn't know what bike replaced the SC-30 at the time (John is right, the Venture series seems to be the new SC series) so I can't order anything that I don't know what I'm ordering and secondly I'm not dropping $400 for a bike that I haven't seen and been measured for. I'm a very tall person and most off-the-shelf bikes do not fit me, I had to special order the last one.
@Mtrlpqbiker - Actually I had a chance to see the SC30 at the shop that I bought it. It was too small but since I did like it, I was able to get measured and they ordered the one in my size.
It doesn't have to be a Raleigh, but the two stores in my area don't have anything in the SC category. They have beach cruisers, they have road bikes and they have pure mountain bikes. None are what I'm looking for. And when I told them that what they had was nothing like my SC, they grew cold and they didn't seem interested in helping me anymore.
Hence why I'm asking.
My only other option is to take a trip up from Maryland to New Jersey and talk to the place I got the SC30 from.

It's a comfort bike so a Raleigh Venture would be pretty close. Visit all of the local bike shops and take a look at comfort and hybrid bikes.

Does your next bike have to be a Raleigh? The SC30 was a fairly common sort of comfort hybrid. Just because the shops in your area don't have a similar looking bike doesn't mean that some of the bikes they do have won't suit you. There is no guarantee that the current Venture model is any better for you than a bike from another company that a bike shop might actually have in stock for you to try. You say that I fully agree that you might not want to order a bike without being able to try it out in advance, but you seem to have done that when you bought your previous bike. It is possible to measure you for a bike without having the actual bike in the store, good shops have tools they use to fit you. However, having a good fit and liking the way a bike feels when you are riding it are two different things. You don't say how tall you are. There may be shops that specialize in selling to difficult to fit riders who are unusually short or tall.
