Can cops speed whenever they feel like it?

It is my understanding that police and other emergency vehicles can only speed if the flashing lights and siren is on-and they still have to stop at red lights for a few seconds to make sure the way is clear.

The thing about cops is that no other cop will ticket a fellow officer-even in a different jurisdiction.

Update:

Thanks for the reply, Big Mike.

You look sort of villainous yourself

You have the wrong understanding kid, police can respond in a hurry called silent alarm situation that requires them not to have the siren on nor flashing lights.

A police officer when not responding to an emergency must follow and obey all traffic lights and speed laws in the state he or she is working in.

There are exceptions to every rule. This rule I am telling you of is that I as an officer may speed if using my lights and sirens puts you the public or the person or persons calling 911 for help in harms way. I may not use my red light and sirens for the following reasons, but not limited to the following reasons: home invasion robbery, hostage situation, active shooter, man with a gun, hold up alarm, physical domestic with weapons involved, ETC.

I also do not have to slow down for red light to make sure the intersection is clear when running with my lights and sirens on. I do however, slow to a stop or slow role to keep myself safe, the public safe and follow my departments policy's.

Will have you know I have traveled through a red light at over 100 mile per hour and never hit the breaks. Granted, I could see in all directions and no cars where coming and the call warranted it.

I hope this answers your questions?

Yes They must obey the Law as well. The only time they can speed is when they get a call or chasing someone they must have they're lights and/or siren going. But your right about cops writing other cops tickets not likely to happen unless the other cop is swerving everywhere "drunk driving" or Driving under the influence."

There was a news story about a Cop pulling over a fellow officer the other officer was drunk off his ***.

Only if its an emergency and they NEED to get to a place. Not just because they want to, most police do now though. They put on there sirens if they are stuck in traffic, damn. If they got caught doing that they'd probably lose there job.
