what audio format do I use to play music from a CD in my car?

Hi, I have an older car with a CD player and I would like to play some music that I have in Sibelius 7. Can anyone tell me what format I would have to save or convert the file to to play it on my car CD player?

Thank you,

Scott

If it's an older car it probably does not have an MP3-compatible CD player. If not you need to make what is called a CD-DA or "RedBook" CD. What you put on the CD are basically .wav files (no compression) but it is not just a matter of burning a data CD with 44.1 kHz / 16 bit .wav files on it. You have to do what is called "mastering" the CD.

However this is easy. There are CD "mastering" apps for both Windows and Mac. Some of them will even let you start with MP3 files and do the conversion to .wav automatically.

But before you go to that trouble, you should try just burning a few mp3 files to a data CD and seeing if your car will play it. That's better anyway, since a CD-DA CD can only hold about 74 minutes of audio per the standard, or 80 minutes with most modern blanks. In MP3s the CD can hold about 4 times as much, depending on the bit rate you use.

It should say in the car manual, but

most cars work with mp3 files, so

    you should start there.
