What's the best Harley for a new rider?
I am a new rider (just got my MC license) and already own an 83' Sportster that has been somewhat modified by the previous owner and which has a few mechanical issues. Don't really have the time to be tinkering with it and was thinking about purchasing a new Harley, but want to get some advice on a good starter bike, one that is easy to ride, before I drop thousands on a new bike.
Any suggestions from experienced riders would be helpful. Thanks!

83 is kind of old for a bike. If you absolutely have to have a Harley, a newer Sportster would be your first option. The Sportster is Harley's 'entry level' bike. I don't think they're ideal for a new rider, but it's the smallest, simplest Harley. If it was me I think I might look at a Honda Shadow also.

Harley did not make an 883 sporster in 83 so the 83 should be 1000cc
I have no idea how old you are or how much you can spend but you say you would like to get a good starter bike before you drop thousands on a new bike. If you want a bike that is a cruiser then look for something like a used Honda Shadow or Yamaha V-Star in the 650cc range. You should be able to pick one up for a reasonable price ($3,000) and they have proven to be very dependable.
I ride a Harley and I can promise you most of us started on a smaller Japanese bike. Once you get used to riding and decide what kind of riding you like or want to do then you can decide if you want to drop more money on a new Harley . . .

If your '83 is an 883 you may wish to jump up to a 1200 Sportster or the newer 48.
If it has to be a Harley, go to a Harley Shop, they do allow people to sit on them.

Just pick the one you like. Harleys are all low speed, low powered machines except the Vrod, they are all too heavy and too expensive to be practical for a beginner. A 250 or 300 ninja is a good choice for a new rider.

I don't see how an over weight overpriced two wheeled tractor that is as common as a mini van is ever a good idea for anyone.
