Are open plan houses better?
People frequently talk about open plan houses. Not everybody wants that. Most people want ROOMS, SEPARATE ROOMS!
Young folks want their own room. Parents want their own room. Somebody may want to watch tv and somebody else might not.
Previously when heating was a bunch of fireplaces, large rooms were a drawback. That situation is not such an issue now.

The concept of opened floor plans came about to make a house of a certain square footage fell larger by eliminating many of the walls that would traditionally be used. As the other two answers have stated, this is usually only in common areas on the first floor. Personally I think the other advantage is a more complete circulation of heat and air conditioning.

Even open plan houses usually have private space for sleeping and bathing, it is just the kitchen, dining and living areas that run into each other. Considerations are cooking smells, noise from domestic machinery, and cleaning, and general clutter. A well planned one could work well..

Open plans usually only address the kitchen, living room and dining room. All the other traditional rooms stay the same.
