Should I pay for bad job?

I asked a musician to compose a song for $310 so I can buy the rights to use it in a video.

He composed it and recorded it. Problem is that the song sounds really bad; like he didn't put much effort into it. It was poorly thought out. I thought he had some talent but it turned out he didn't have much talent.

I said I can't use it and don't want to buy it anymore. He still wants the money for making the song.

Would you pay up for something like this?

Unless you have any a agreement that you must like and approve of the song you should pay.

How can anyone know what someone else will like.

It is strange that you agreed to pay $310. $300 350 375. Seem more like normal amounts

There's what you are legally obligated to pay and what you should do

You said write a song and I will pay you $310. He wrote a song. You think that the song sucks at and it probably does and you think he wrote it in 10 minutes in the shower smoking pot and he may have.

In reality he may have spent several hours going over every word repeatedly.

When you turn him away he might sell the song almost as an after thought to a movie studio. It might become a major hit by changing one word and he may become a household name.

It happened before. Think "Mrs Robinson" The Graduate and Paul Simon. He could not give the song away until he changed one word.

I need more info. Why would u offer up exactly $310 for something u never heard? Preposterous. Apparently, neither one of u have a notion of how that business operates. no. I would say u are not liable, but u mislead, by ignorance, someone else. The proverbial BLIND leading the BLIND. Buy the guy a drink, n laugh together at your folly. u may find a friend. If u find he did put great effort, do him a favor.Learn. Laugh. BE happy!

No, I wouldn't pay for something that I wasn't satisfied with. Like anybody else who did any type of work for me I would let them know what I didn't like and give him the opportunity to fix it. Since this was a creative work don't be mean. Just tell him that you expected a song with more clarity, etc. Be prepared for a second similar song and a law suit if you don't pay. Document everything to show that you tried to work with him to fix what was wrong.

Don't pay for something you didn't ask for. In this case you asked for a song that was of a certain quality and such but got something sub par.
