Safest neighborhoods for women in or near Portland, OR?

I'm a single 46 year old woman with no children who is moving to Portland, Oregon, next month for the main reason that I've always wanted to live there and I'm dropping my big corporate career in exchange for some peace.

Which neighborhoods are friendly and mostly safe and which should I stay away from? I'm planning to rent a one bedroom or studio and I don't need fancy, I'd just like to live near good folks.

Here is Portland's crime map: http://www.portlandmaps.com/maps/police/detail.cfm...

Stay away from outer east side and along NE/SE 82nd. Parts of inner eastside and N Portland are spotty, so trust your instincts when scoping out a neighborhood.

If you can afford it, the west side is generally safer and moderately friendly. Neighborhoods such as SE Hawthorne, SE Division, NE Alberta, N Mississippi are quite friendly too, though in higher demand than other eastside locations due to their trendiness or hipness.

If you don't need to be in Portland, consider even nicer neighborhoods in Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Tualatin, and West Linn.

I tend to disagree about the west side being safer. Once your cross the West Hills there are some high crime areas. I'd try to stay near downtown, perhaps in the Hawthorne, Laurelhurst or Mt. Tabor areas?

Laurelhurst but south of Hassalo Street.

Some would say the Pearl District but there are too many homeless psycho freaks in that neighborhood. I've lived in Portland since 1975. Goose Hollow and NW 23rd are excellent areas but again there are constant homeless mental cases wandering the area and panhandling. I lived in Goose Hollow on 21st Ave. from 1989 to 2009.

definitely the NW near 23rd!!! I lived there for a while and it was amazing, super safe, super trendy, cute neighborhoods, walking distance to everything, friendly people who all seemed to know each other, close to lots of hiking trails in forest park, cool local hangouts and coffee joints, etc. simply amazing, blissful.
