Mark 3:29 - How come Jesus prescribed a punishment but not a description of the sin?

What, according to Jesus own words, is a blaspheme?

Update:

Blasphemy is the act of claiming the attributes of deity - just as Jesus and the Jews of Jesus' time knew. Therefore if Jesus prescribed the punishment for a sin how could he have committed the same sin!

The sin is described in the Law, Jesus was referring to Numbers 15:30 as a Jew he would not have said the name of God (translated LORD). He substituted Holy Spirit.

Num 15:30 'But the person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or an alien, that one is blaspheming the LORD; and that person shall be cut off from among his people.

In short calling the deeds Jesus did, done by the power of Satan. Jesus did the miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit. Some mean it is not possible to blaspheme as Jesus does not walk among us in flesh anymore. Some define it as harden ones hearth against the gospel.

My MacArthur study Bible say this:

3:29 whoever blasphemes … never has forgiveness. Whenever someone deliberately and disrespectfully slanders the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit in pointing to the Lordship and redemption of Jesus Christ, he completely negates and forfeits any possibility of present or future forgiveness of sins, because he has wholly rejected the only basis of God’s salvation.

    Dear Friend,

Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost/Spirit has nothing to do with denying Who Jesus/God is, as many claim. The Word does not say, "but the blasphemy against Jesus shall not be forgiven." Think about that.

I know a lot of churches teach that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is to deny Jesus Christ but that is a lie. Read the Word for yourself and don't listen to what some person tells you, no matter who they are.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is to "deny" His awesome POWER of the Third Person in the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Saying for instance that miracles don't take place anymore; healing doesn't take place anymore, and the like. And also, you'll hear people say, "I can't stop sinning, I'm only human and I'm not perfect." They are denying the Power of the Holy Spirit because He can and will 'keep' a believer from committing "willful" sin in their life, (if they "allow" Him to). And if they say, "No He can't." Then they are calling Him a liar, denying His Power and committing blasphemy. The unforgivable, unpardonable sin! Remember, when Jesus rose up out of the water...the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove. Then, after 40 days being tempted in the wilderness by Satan, He came out it "full" Power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus overcame the world, to be our living example, that we can too. Through the Power of the Holy Spirit. Think about that.

The Spirit of God then enters the person to give them the Power to start their new life in Christ. A person then becomes a 'new' creation in Christ and is Spiritually born into the family of God and so becomes a child of God. God sends His Holy Spirit to live within believers to give them His Power over their sinful nature so that they are able to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Through the Holy Spirit, believers are FREED from the power of sin and its penalty of hell and they are no longer slaves to their sinful nature.

1 John 3:9 tells us that "no one who is born of God will continue to sin" so anyone who is born again will not have a sinful lifestyle.

"Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW creature: OLD things are passed away; behold, all things are become ...NEW."

To deny the awesome Power of the Holy Spirit is...blasphemy.

    Blessings,

Jesus was talking to the Pharisees who attributed work done by the Holy Spirit to Satan. Pharisees were religious leaders who studied scripture and knew that only the Holy Spirit could cast out demons. They were so threatened by Jesus that they were willing to credit Satan for what they knew only the Holy Spirit could do in order to discredit Jesus. Jesus told them that what they did to the Son of Man (Jesus) could be forgiven, but deliberately telling lies about the Holy Spirit to people who looked to them as religious authorities would not be forgiven.

Even though Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Ghost were one, the Pharisees (Jewish leaders) did not know that Jesus was God, so what they said or did to him could be forgiven.

Jesus was talking to Jews who grew up in The Old Covenant all their lives, and knew very well what "blasphemy" is. Jesus did not invent the term, and he did not need to explain it to those he was addressing.

It is described in Matthew 12:31-32

    The Unpardonable Sin

31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

Blasphemy is taking the name in vain, cursing, defiling the name as decribed in Leviticus 24. So, it could be saying something like, "Oh, the Holy Spirit told me to rape and murder" or some expletive language involving the utterance of Holy Spirit.
