Can a single external hard drive work for Windows and Mac?

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to hard drives, but I know that the Windows run on NTFS and that Macs run on HFS+. I was wondering if there are such hard drives that operate on both? I know I can format the hard drives by installing Paragon and MacDrive, but I would rather just buy a hard drive that can be used between the two OS without having to be formatted myself. Or is this not possible?

Thanks!

Why not try formatting instead of buying an entire new hard drive? If you're not sure and are really gonna not do it yourself and would rather buy a new harddrive, that would be the better solution :P

However, I would try to partition it into two parts and then try to format them correctly and see if that works. Seems like it could work, never tried it before because I don't see the need in it.
