What kind of assignments do students get in High School in the U.S?
I go to a Private British school in China and I was wandering what kind of assignments senior HS students get, especially in honor classes for English. And by 'kind' i mean like topics and what books you read and if you have to write many reports on them and just general things that teachers make you do for assignments. I know teachers go tougher on you when you take honor classes but is it a lot tougher, for e.g if you took honor History, on a scale of 1-10 how much harder is honor history than normal history?
thanks

In regular there's rarely homework and most assignments are like short answer. In reg class they read The Stranger, Hamlet, To kill a mockingbird, really almost all the same books as honors. An essay a quarter usually is the biggest assignment.
In honors there's a lot of days with homework. It's more long responses and things like that. Usually an essay every couple or few weeks (English classes, rarely in other classes). Like I said about the same books but read quicker and sometimes harder ones. They also read a lot of Shakespeare and obscure authors. In history they may read a book as well but nothing tricky.
For topics in English is just whatever we are reading and of course grammar and the basics. For history it depends on the class title (some are US history done are world history) but we cover a lot from Ancient Rome, civil war, 9/11, and the first humans.
It depends on the class for how much harder. English is only a little harder (3), history isn't hard at all (1), math is super hard (9), science is pretty hard (7) but that's just my opinion.

Each high school in the US is different; therefore, there are different materials that will be taught and different methods in each state.
For example, I'm in an Early College High School program and it is literally hard work. I take AP classes for everything and the way the teachers teach us are ways to prepare us for college. We move at a fast pace. We are never on a book or topic for more than a week. We have read books like Othello, There Eyes Were Watching God, Macbeth, Brave New World, Metamorphosis, Black Masters, and much more. We have homework every night. We have discussions regarding each book and there is sometimes a test every week or two. We do have pop quizzes. Our assignments are expected to be turned in when they are due and no later than that. The teachers do not hold our hands when it comes to our school work, they will help, but they won't do the work for us. Sometimes our teachers won't even remind us about an assignment due. We are supposed to remember ourselves.
Like I said though, every school is different. I've never attended another school that wasn't this one, so I cannot compare. I would say though that normal classes doesn't prepare you or challenge you as an honor class.
