Characters and accents?

So I would like to have a russian character, that is her background. The trouble is, I feel like it would sound stupid for me to try and write the accent... Is it expected that I do? What do you guys think ? :)

Rather than try to write the whole accent. Which can be very difficult and clumsy.

Just say she has an accent in her description, and add one or two Russia words, to give some colour to her character."Da" instead of yes, for example.

You might like to give her some formal language, of the kind that people tend to speak with when they learn English "properly", OR to show she is not fluent.

For example she might say; "Thanking you". rather than "thanks".

OR "I am liking this very much."

    "Please to come inside."

Or to show she has learned English in a formal style. She might say phrases such as; "In which we..". "in order that we achieve". "invite you to consider", "Most gracious"

No. Gratuitously writing accents is a staple of bad writing. It comes through as the author just enjoying writing words in a quirky way, for the heck of it.

In fact if J.K.Rowling stopped doing it so heavily she'd have more to speak for her as a serious writer than just her sales figures.

It may have been good style in the Bronte sisters' times, but literature moves on.

Also, the first reply immediately contains the single worst mistake people make when writing a foreign character. A foreigner would never realistically say BASIC words in their own language. (Such as "yes", "please", etc.) It merely shows that these are the only words in the respective language that the _author_ happens to know.

You don't have to write her being all Heellow how arrre you? You should just precise that she has a russian accent so that the reader can speak in her voice in his head. Remind the reader a few times during the story by saying how she rolls her R's or how another character is annoyed or fascinated by her accent.

Some writers write accents; some don't. Depending on how well she speaks English, her syntax may be strange, but otherwise you can just write that she speaks accented English.
