    2x = 14

    x = 7

    2x + y = 5

    2(7) + y = 5

    14 + y = 5

    y = 5 - 14

    y = - 9

    check..

    2x + y = 5

    2(7) + (-9) = 5

    14 - 9 = 5

    5 = 5 (correct)

    If 2x = 14 then you know x = 7. And you know 14 + y = 5 so y = 5 - 14 = -9.

    Given: 2x + y = 5 ---------equation 1

    2x = 14 -----------equation 2

    Required: x = ? , y = ?

    Solution: From equation 2, 2x = 14 <==> x = 7 -------equation 3

    using equation 2 in equation 1 , we get

    ==> 14 + y = 15

    ==> y = 1 ------------equation 4

    from equation 3 and equation 4 , we get

    ==> x = 7 and y = 1 Answer
