Why do we not have a global Space agency on earth?

I was reading on this forum about some countries wanting to go to the moon others have plans for mars and so on and so on,

The only roadblock for most countries is money. So why not create a United earth space agency. Every country could work on their goals and everybody could benefit from technologies developed and possibly save a lot of money. They could have a group of astronauts that could work on any and all experiments and space travels.

Does this make sense would it save money and could it work? Any thoughts on the subject is welcome.

Update:

I expected some of these answers.

The agencies that already exist already have skilled workers. The chinese want to go to the moon and we want to go to mars. So why not combine our efforts so that everybody get what they want. They go to the moon and once there we go to mars. Less expensive. Of course I'm idealistic, if this was easy earth would be a much better place. It starts somewhere...

I guess we still have a long way to go before we can finally unite.

Somewhat idealistic and naive of you. The world is not that well co-ordinated. How much would each country pay? How much should someone who makes $2 US a month pay versus someone who makes $5,000 US a month? Who would get the short term benefits of all the skilled jobs. The developed nations control 95% of the resources on this planet and few of the people, if we were to share and co-operate as we should, since you are now living in a developed nation, you would loose almost 90% of what you have. There's too much disparity in the world for a Barney the Dinosaur strategy of pre-school children to work.

As great as the costs may be, it pales behind the costs of our wars, of our health care system, even of our purchases of hamburgers and fries. There is plenty of money to invest in space, there just isn't a return on investment yet and until such a return has been proven, the investments are all on hold.

No, it doesn't make sense, it would not save money and the world isn't a schoolyard playground.

LOL, seriously? We can't even get nations to agree on who should control some piddly little worthless islands. You expect us to just band together and create a multibillion dollar cooperative space agency? If we did found such an enterprise it would end up like the United Nations. I have a buddy who used to work for the UN.... It is just a load of politics and bureaucracy that accomplishes basically nothing. Yeah, that's all we need.
