Safety traveling by train ~ Amtrak?
Does anyone have recent experience traveling by train on Amtrak? My daughter will be in college this Fall in Spokane WA and will need to get home in December to Denver CO. It's a 2 1/2 day trip by train, but we're concerned for her safety traveling alone. She's going to be 19. My husband traveled by bus a year or so ago and said it's REALLY changed. He didn't feel very safe himself with the other passengers, so I'm much more concerned about our daughter. Is Amtrak much safer than the Greyhound bus system now? Thanks for your feedback!!

According to official USDOT records, the safest modes of transport are as follows:
1. Airplane
2. Bus
3. Train
So Amtrak is more dangerous than Greyhound, at least by death rate. She should fly to Denver or take a Greyhound instead. The route is Denver is actually pretty safe, less suspicious passengers than other Greyhound routes. I've taken it many times, I've lived in both Seattle and Denver.
Anyway, Amtrak is safer than a car, but it cannot beat airline or bus safety. The biggest safety problem with Amtrak is frequent derailments and collisions more so than getting robbed or killed by a passenger.
Amtrak is NOT safer than Greyhound. Do you trust USDOT records more or overrated safety reports from people who are deceived by the comfort and "good looks" of an Amtrak train?
I used to be such deceived myself. I was quite surprised to see that Greyhound is safer than Amtrak. But facts are facts.
And please, the suspicous passengers on Greyhound are mostly not that bad. Just because a guy has an afro, a dirty beard, or old, ripped jeans does not mean he will kill or mug you! I have talked to them myself many times, I have no fear of them anymore. If you are really worried about safety on Greyhound, sit right behind the driver.
Amtrak Coach doesn't even have attandants nearby to watch her safety. Amtrak passengers have increasingly been aressted for smuggling drugs, fighting, and threats.

If you are concerned about her safety then buy her an airplane ticket. She'll be home in 2 hours, not 2 1/2 days and her safety and your peace of mind is way more important.
The Amtrak ticket is probably more expensive than a flight anyway. Amtrak is the most expensive way to travel in the USA.
I just checked the fares. A one way fare on Amtrak from Spokane to Denver in December is $306. It's a 63 hour trip on the train.
If you fly it will cost $237 and it's a 2 hour flight.

Amtrak is fine. The engineer/conductor walks around all of the time checking tickets and chatting with the passengers.
Can't fly? 2 1/2 is along time and I know Amtrak take some offbeat routes. Isn't it more expensive than flying too?

Yes, Amtrak is much safer than Greyhound. Reserve a private room for your daughter instead of coach. It is relatively inexpensive. The small private areas are quite comfortable and safe. She will enjoy the experience.

My in simple terms subject is that trains do not consistently run on time. in case you omit your connection you would be caught in Chicago all on my own and you would be too youthful to lease a inn room. those stations are actually not Amtrak-in simple terms stations... i've got not been to DC yet Chicago Union Station is extensive, has each and every of the community metra site visitors from 4-6 pm, and it would be slightly stressful. %. numerous food or purchase your food on the practice. you would be extra secure in case you reside with the crouds and wait at your terminal for the period of transfers rather of exploring the station for food.

She will be fine. Amtrak is safe. Just tell her not to talk to strangers. If she is going to college in a different state she can manage a 2.5 day trip back home. Don't worry!

Yes she should be fine.
