Will Road Biking give me similar levels of Cardio exercise to Running?

I'm a 14 year old boy and I used to run 3 and a half miles, 3 mornings a week in 30 minutes. I have got a bit fed up of that now, but I recently got a new mountain bike. I have been riding between 40-50 miles most days and I find it much more enjoyable than running. The only problem I have is that I worry that it wont keep me as fit as my running did, because you use more muscles when running. Is this the case or will I stay just as fit riding long distances most days?

cycling is great cardio and good for lower body building. But running is more energy consumption. I often cycled 40-50 miles a day, and did not lose any weight until i started running 5 miles day--the weight just shed off like crazy.

The problem is that cycling is a very efficient form of transportation. lol

i would recommend that you use both. if you only commit to one you run the risk of getting burned out too soon, like you did with running. add variety to your work outs, it will make the enthusiasm last longer, and you will get in better shape as a result.

    Good luck .

Cycling in my opinion can give you a much greater cardio work out then running. You are doing much longer work outs while staying cool and carrying water. Get a set of weights and tone your upper body.

Cardio & muscles used are two different things. Cardio deals with the HEART & circulatory system. Cycling IS a cardiovascular activity.
