Tips on how to improve speed (for an intermediate-level guitarist)?

Here's the thing... I am an intermediate guitarist, who can play barely as fast as the solo from "Stairway To Heaven." Any tips on making my fingers faster/stronger? I can try to play fast, but it sounds like a train wreck. Plus, I do NOT have a metronome for those who suggest I do the fancy little "follow the metronome" trick... I am working on my 2nd year of guitar (and high-school), and would like to say "I can play like Yngwie J Malmsteen" by the time I graduate...

About all you can really do is keep beating it until it's right. As you've no doubt heard and read before here. practice is the key ingredient...the more you put into your music, the more you'll get out of it. Don't get discouraged, I've told students for years that if you concentrate on getting the right notes, every time, the speed will kind of come all by itself. You still have to practice, though! Good luck!

Unfortunately , a metronome does help but if you don't have access to one. If you don't one method I find that helps is playing the same thing over and over again. If you get sick of it move on and come back to it. Personally I find playing everyday helps big time.If I don't my hands cramp up more!

    Hope that helped!
