Ethanoic acid is a clear, colorless liquid with a slightly sweetish odor. It is soluble in water and alcohol. Ethane is hydrophobic and causes the solution to be highly ordered. Ethanoic acid is very soluble in water it is not completely ionised and so is a weak acid.

    Ethanoic acid is CH3COOH

    Ethane is CH3CH3

Ethanoic acid will be more soluble in water than ethane because it is more polar. Note the COOH group in ethanoic acid and no such polarity in ethane.
