Isn't divorce a greater threat to the sanctity of marriage than same sex marriage?

I mean, divorce is literally terminating marriages. There can't be any sanctity in a marriage that doesn't even exist anymore. And the ease at which people can get divorces inevitably makes people take marriage a lot less seriously.

So since divorce is a greater threat to the sanctity of marriage, why don't Republicans want it illegal as well as same sex marriage?

Update:

@RUKidding: Sorry for the generalization. I know all of them don't but I believe a majority of Republican elected officials are opposed to it.

The "sanctity of marriage" argument is a red herring - always has been. This was an argument invented by demagogues to oppose gay marriage because they couldn't come up with a legitimate reason.

There are steps you can take to actually build a strong, stable marriage and avoid divorce. Read here https://tr.im/savethemarriage

Here are some key steps to apply to your marriage:

    - Start by understanding and being informed.

You can never be too informed about tools, methods and studies about building successful marriages. Understand the risk factors like your age and maturity at marriage can determine how successful it will be, the anatomy of an affair and what you can do after infidelity. Understand the success factors like the personal and psychological circumstances that will influence your marriage, what are the tools and approaches available to you in dealing with conflict, and numerous other relevant data. All this information is readily available to you whether through self-help material, through a counselor, support group or other venues. In fact, we have made it our commitment to provide these to you in different formats to help you make the best marriage you can.

The thing is, remember, this is information is not available for you to begin hyper-psychoanalyzing your relationship, yourself and your partner. It's not a matter of spewing trivia for the sake of conversation ' information is there for you to ponder over and internalize to help you transform yourself and your marriage. That includes maturing to such a point that you become more competent in your knowledge but more prudent in approach.

Some people get married with the sanctity of marriage well in mind.....and then have to run for their lives. Some quite literally.

Is marriage still a sanctity with an abuser? Are women supposed to be put down or beaten - and some even killed - just because of a piece of paper?

No. However, marriage has been on a downward trend with many couples opting to have children outside the sanctity of marriage. As to the "majority of Republican elected officials" I would also offer that many Democratic elected officials whose voters are pro Bible and religion also take the same position.

And gays will have divorces too.

It is what it is and generalizing serves no one.

I'm just waiting for the first statistics to come out that compare same-sex-marriage divorces to "straight" marriage divorces. I'm betting that the former will far outweigh the latter.

There is a singular solution which could serve to lower the divorce rate and increase government revenues at the same time.

Simply, issue marriage licenses in the same way drivers licenses are issued.........so that they expire and need to be renewed.

Those who wish to no longer remain married would not renew their license, eliminating any need for divorce and lowering the rate.

Those who wish to remain married would have to renew the license and pay a fee to remain married.

I do believe it's a bigger threat to it, yes. I am always disappointed to hear about divorces, although some are necessary. I am a big advocate of marriage and large families

I would think so but with multi-married Born again Christian men who want us to back them for leadership, is not something wrong here? If you take an oath which marriage is and you break it more than once, why should he take better care of strangers than he does the ones he loves? Same sex-marriages, they can not do any worse?

Divorce, even though it is regretful, opens gates toward new marriage as well.

But same sex partnership is not marriage at all. Even to Ancient Greeks it was never considered marriage.

Calling these partnerships "marriage" is a dead end for the whole society, not just for marriage.
