NFL Fantasy Draft Help (2013)?

I am in an NFL PPR league (with standard scoring) that allows one previous season keeper, and I'm looking for opinions from other fantasy players. After some consideration I decided that either C.J. Spiller or Dez Bryant were my best options (but if you have a strong opinion feel free to voice it-see below).

My real question is this:

Without knowing my draft position (out of 10 teams) do you think I'm better to keep Bryant and possibly draft two running backs as quick as possible? Or, should I keep C.J. Spiller and draft a second running back in my first round, and attempt to draft a good wide receiver early, so that I have two decent running backs and a decent receiver?

Other info to consider in our league:

This is a 10 team PPR standard scoring league. Our weekly roster is QB-RB-RB-WR-WR-OPTION (RB/WR/TE)-TE-K-DEF-DP and 6 bench spots.

Known keepers from other teams (I can't draft them): Calvin Johnson, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tony Gonzalez. Two other owners are currently split as well on Ray Rice/Jimmy Graham and Arian Foster/Adrian Peterson (having the number one and number two running back didn't help him, if you were wondering...).

I have to pick a keeper before I find out my draft position, unfortunately.

I felt that C.J. Spiller or Dez Bryant were my best choices, but I could choose any of the following players:

C.J. Spiller

Dez Bryant

Rob Gronkowski (I'm a "safe" fantasy player, which is why I have decided against using a free roster position to keep Gronk)

Tom Brady

Alfred Morris

Randall Cobb

Marshawn Lynch

Jamaal Charles

Andre Johnson (HOU-WR)

If you have a real strong opinion about my keeper voice it, but I'm pretty sure I want either Spiller or Bryant.

Every fantasy player has a strong opinion about the "right way" to do it, I'd love to hear yours. There are no wrong answers! Thanks!

Spiller had plenty of big games last season. Being in a timeshare role, however, that limited his potential. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers he puts up this season in a more expanded role. I don't have a lot of faith in the Bills offense, though.

With Dez, I also have some concerns in regards to the team's offense. The Cowboys are so up-and-down.

I'd rather go with a more consistent commodity. From the players you listed, I'd take Brady. New England is primed for a huge season. It's almost a guarantee that they'll put up a host of points each game. It's also not farfetched to say that Brady could be an MVP candidate.

Spiller is a 1st round pick in almost every PPR draft. Bryant is a 2nd rounder.

You keep Spiller, and your first two picks are still a RB and WR (order depends on who is around).

Your draft position doesn't matter, you are keeping your most valuable player, and that's Spiller. Then you can pity the person keeping Tony Gonzalez.

EDIT: I actually didn't see Charles there... it's him or Spiller. If you like Spiller more than Charles, then so be it. But I'd keep either RB over Dez.

  • I hate to answer your question with a question, but will you know your draft position prior to having to make this decision? That could make a huge difference! My order for keepers based solely on best available player would look like this: Jamaal Charles, CJ Spiller, Dez, Lynch, etc.... In my opinion, if you are going to keep a RB, I'd go Charles, but if you definitely don't want him, then I'd go Spiller over Dez. I'm actually a Cowboys fan, but Romo and the Cowboys Offense are so temperamental, I'd be nervous keeping Dez over either Spiller or Charles.

According to NFL.com, the coach for the Bills said they plan to use Spiller "until he throws up," so you just know he is going to be the main threat. I would go with Spiller and try to draft another WR/RB early on.

Definitely keep Spiller. The Bills look like they are going to rely on him as much as the Vikings rely on AD.
