Does Al Green have the best phrasing or what?

I was listening to Jesus Is Waiting the other day and the way he sings 'Gee-us' is spectacular.

Generally he has a great sense of when to stretch a word out to like 20 syllables or shorten it to 1. And his voice can be all nice and sweet and then flip over to dirty in a hot minute.

Feel free to remark on Al Green's phrasing or about how much he rules in general.

Update:

Busta Rhymes? Busta Rhymes couldn't deliver a pizza.

He took the lessons of the church to heart, especially MLK Jr.'s delivery style. I remember seeing this when it first aired and immediately being reminded of the way MLK always had someone just behind him, echoing and exhorting, by the tiny exuberant guy behind Al ;)

Musically, he rules, but I've always wondered what the true story is behind Mary Woodson attacking him with the boiling grits, and her "suicide" that wasn't reported for two hours-eerily similar to the Phil Spector case. I do know that Al found religion right afterwards, which had a big effect on his style...

His music never gets old for me. And I love how the horns are used almost as percussion for that little punch here and there!

    *edit*

And listening to this now, I had to smile when at about the one minute mark he stretched the single syllable word "can" into about 6 syllables :-D

He's got the total package. But yes, his phrasing is top notch. It seems his delivery makes even the small, meaningless words mean something. Know what I mean?
