Help with my grandsons (older) laptop?

A short while ago, my grandson was given a Dell Latitude D510 laptop. I know that it is several years old, but cannot for the life of me, figure out why it quit recognizing the AC adapter. The people who gave it to him even changed out the mobo, but still no luck. I thought it was maybe the AC power supply or the battery, bought a new one of each, but no luck. Any helpful suggestions, other than "throw it away", would be most appreciated.

Update:

Thank you Starrysky, for that answer. Not being any sort of technician, I could only watch as the board was changed out, bit the power port SEEMED to be part of the board itself.

The new power supply I bought was an exact replacement for the original, right down to socket type and power output.
