DVI vs HDMI is there difference?

Hi I've just bought a monitor that does not have HDMI but it was a bargain (£70 more would have got me a HDMI) I know that DVI does not carry sound but HDMI does, I'm not bothered about that.

What differences in video quality (if any) are there between them?

There should not be any at all. They use the same digital signals, just different pinouts as DVI allows for analog VGA as well as dual-link digital.

HDMI transmits the signal to the display digitally where it is separated into Red, Green and Blue (RGB) and processed for display there. DVI is a signal may have already been separated into RGB at the source and transmitted to the display. If it passes the signal via DVI-D then there should be no difference. Yes the picture quality can be different IF the source outputs DVI-A and does not separate the signal well and I have seen this as an issue especially with some cable boxes. Most times the difference is negligible but yes..there CAN be a difference.

DVI single link (3.96 Gbps) allows greater bandwidth than a standard HDMI (2.25 Gbps). However, a high-speed HDMI (10.2 Gbps) allows more bandwidth than dual link DVI (7.92 Gbps). HDMI supports audio and video data while DVI focuses on the video tends for HDMI hit the market.
