Why do so many people still vote Democrat or Republican?

Between attacks on the press, extraordinary renditions, indefinite detention, torture and various other violations of the Constitution and human rights, I just can't fathom why so many people are still so fixated on those two political parties when there are often decent alternative candidates on the ballot. I mean, there are still a few decent people in each party, but not enough of them to justify such support after the failure of the Amash Amendment. Do voters really want a totalitarian government? Are voters really that swayed by the biased mainstream media?

Update:

I'm not asking people to vote Green, although I would certainly consider that a good thing if you did decide to in 2014 and onwards. Keep on voting Democrat or Republican if you feel you must, or vote for a different minor party like the Libertarians or the Constitution or an Independent candidate. I'm just curious about the rationale behind such continued support for the Democrats and Republicans, although I've heard plenty about the "spoiler theory" and "wasted vote" arguments.

    1. Hyperpartisanship. They cling pathetically to their parties, even when their parties stop representing their beliefs.

    2. Because 3rd parties seem to have no chance at winning anything. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. They don't think that a party can win, so they don't vote for it, ensuring that it won't win and further perpetuating the idea that it can't win.

I cannot answer for anyone else, but I do because no third party has posted a candidate that is viable or (more importantly) where I am on the issues that are important to me.

I do however always vote for Bernie Sanders (I live in Vermont) if that makes you feel better about yourself.
