termination of tenancy?

except as prohibited by law, this agreement may be terminated by either party after service upon the other a written 30-day notice of termination of tenancy.

this is written in my contract for my apartment lease...does this mean that even if the lease year is not over i can leave early without having to pay for the rest of the time after serving a notice to the landlord?

No, it does NOT mean that. The language simply indicates that you can terminate the agreement. It makes NO mention of penalties, etc. which may accompany such termination. You need to meet with your landlord to determine any costs which may be imposed due to your early termination.

I hesitate to offer an answer to your question without seeing the rest of the contract or at least the full sentence/paragraph this came from. One must be very carefull not to interpret some fragment as saying what you want it to say without seeing the whole cloth.
