Two quick questions about Doctor Who?

I just recently started watching the series on Netflix on the suggestion of a few friends. I began with the newest series (2005). I'm only about 1/2 way through season 3 right now. So no spoilers! =D

Now, if this is going to be explained at some later time then just let me know that and I'll wait and learn it when it's explained like everyone else. But, since I've never seen any of the older series I don't really have any idea how it works.

1. How quickly does time really go by in the show? As in, how long, for example, was Rose with the Doctor (I know she was 19 when she set off with him but don't think she mentions an age or birthday ever again)? Is a season of Doctor Who roughly a normal year or something, or much longer?

2. Also, since I don't live under a rock....even though I'm not that far yet I am aware that Matt Smith is no longer the Doctor and the new one is going to be Peter Capaldi. Since I've not watched the old ones and just recently got into the show I'm not familiar with the general opinion of the Doctors. So could someone rattle off real quick for me (roughly) who are the fans 'favorite'/'least favorite' doctors? I get the idea that David Tennant is a favorite of people.....but for example, haven't gotten that feeling about Chris Eccleston. Although I think at this point I really liked him.

Just curious!! Thx!

    1) Technically, a season has no real bearing on how much time has passed, one of the latest ones took over 200 years when all was said and done, but usually the writers try to say it is roughly a year unless otherwise specified.

    2) Tennant has quickly become a huge favorite among fans. Tom Baker (4) is the Doctor everyone remembers and had the longest run on the show, and has always been a favorite. Pertwee (3) is another favorite, with his kind grandfatherly nature mixed with his martial arts and great physical ability. My personal favorite is Davidson (5) but I think most fans just find him average. I also like Colin Baker (6) and Sylvester McCoy (7), But I know most fans think that these two were when the show started going downhill before it was finally stopped until 2005. I think though, that everyone's least favorite Doctor is Paul Mcgann (8). As for Eccleston, he wasn't that popular mainly because he was much darker than pretty much very other Doctor (although this could be explained because he had just come from the time war). Also, Eccleston, while he still looked very good in the show, just didn't have the heart other actors had for the role; he basically only played the doctor to reintroduce him to audiences and then left. And then there's Matt Smith. Everyone thought they would hate him, but he also became very popular with the fans pretty quickly. I personally think he does a great job of capturing the same spirit as say, Tom Baker, the kind of quirky and fun character, but still able to be serious and you can tell he has a dark past.

a series can be any amout of time , My Doctor from favorite to least favortem tied at first is Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker and Matt Smith, then Jon Petwee, Peter Davison, William Hartnell, then in no order, Colin Baker, Sylvest McCoy , Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston, my very least favorite and the only one I find almost unbelieveable as the Doctor is David Tennant, he is much much to human. J have to see Peter Capadli to rate him , but he seems like he will be really good

    1. I never thought of it , but yes I think a season is a year, since between every season and another there's Christmas ( a Christmas Special)

    2. As for Fans' favorite doctors, It's usually between the 4th Tom Baker and the 10th David Tennant. Least favorite, I am not sure but I think it's between the 6th and the 7th Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.
