First, UPS would have done this anyway but now they have the Obamacare as an excuse. They are not dropping spouses outright. "UPS becomes one of the highest-profile employers yet to bar working spouses from the company plan. Many firms already require employees to pay a surcharge for working-spouse medical coverage, but some are taking the next step by declining to include them at all, consultants say.

"'They are simply saying to the spouse outright, If you have coverage somewhere else you are not eligible here,’ said Edward Fensholt, a senior vice president at Lockton Cos., a large insurance broker. 'We don’t see a lot of that out there, but more than we used to.' "

In other words, UPS is trying to save money by exlcuding working spouses and using Obamacare to shift blame. This was occuring at other companies before Obamacare and it appears to be occuring after Obamacare but now Obamacare offers working spouses resources to get their own insurance.

Second, this is a blessing in disguise. These spouse can now use the tax credits to buy their insurance on the Obamacare exchange.

Erick Ericksen read full memo today on WSB FM seems there is a $63 per person extra fee for all participants incl spouses and retirees and their spouses which will hit UPS for some 100,000+ people called a participation fee but to be used to subsidize start up of the "exchanges" so now they r penalizing cos that offer good coverage. Also note that this seems to apply only to spouses that have access to other coverage such as through their own jobs.

No, they won't because the rule only applies to those spouses who have coverage through another job.

The company I worked for at the time did this 5 years ago, it's a cost-saving measure which UPS could have chosen to do with or without the Affordable Care Act.

That would depend on what the covered spouses plans are like, if their companies want to offer plans with spousal or childrens coverage, or not, and increasingly, long before Obama, they were deciding not to. That's hardly starting now.

For that matter you might look up SCHIP, a program that was needed under Bush when working class children were dumped by their parents plans leaving them without needed vaccinations, and Bush said SCHIP wouldn't help poor kids, which was true, poor kids had Medicaid to cover them, it was the middle class kids who didn't have insurance anymore that were uncovered and who the plan was designed to help.

I'm afraid you're a little late to the party, this has been going on for quite some time.
