Not everything needs to cost a lot of money. The best way to see the city is walking. Pick a few things worth spending money on - like going to the Statue of Liberty or up the Empire State Building and the rest - just walk around (of course wear comfy shoes). Central Park, Riverside Park, The High-line, the westside path on the Hudson River, across the Brooklyn Bridge, Prospect Park. People watching in various parts of the city is great and entertaining. If you just walk the length of Broadway you would see most of Manhattan. If you want to see a play - try TKTS for deals. Food can cost a fortune but it doesn't have to. There are a million ethnic places that are really cheap, Thai, Mexican, there are great street carts and food trucks and of course a great slice of pizza. Go to Chelsea Market or the Green Market in Union Square. You don't have to buy anything - just check it out. Window shop on 5th Avenue. Bring a water bottle and refill it so you don't have to keep buying water. Research some walking tours you can do on your own.

Despite it's reputation, NYC doesn't have to cost of fortune unless you allow it to.

the most popular questions locals hear is, "what should I not miss when I come to NYC?"

Here's a list of the most popular sights and what gets mentioned the most on the NYC forum.

Empire State Building or Top of the Rock Observation Decks. See Manhattan from all sides. If you do Top of the Rock, get there early and watch the Today Show being filmed.

Wall Street is the perhaps the Financial Capital of the world. From the New York Stock Exchange to the Charging Bull to the Federal Reserve, they are all in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan.

At least one major museum- The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Natural History or the Guggenheim. Don't forget to check the Pay-As-You-Wish Days and Times at the museums.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island - plan a visit to both islands, or just view Lady LIberty at a decent distance from the free Staten Island Ferry. A reservation to go inside the Statue of Liberty Museum is the most exclusive ticket in NYC. Book it early and read why. (Liberty is closed until July 2013 due to Hurricane Sandy. Ellis is closed until 2014)

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge - Well worth a walk across this famous bridge. Walk from Brooklyn towards Manhattan for best views.

Eating! - Eat at any of the hundreds of great mid-range restaurants in the city, and have at least one blow-out top-notch dinner.

These are a few places to visit to experience some great views and photo opportunities:

    Battery Park Promenade

Brooklyn Bridge in daytime & nighttime

    Empire State Building Observation Deck

Rockefeller Center - Top of the Rock Viewing level

    Staten Island Ferry

    Times Square

    Brooklyn Heights Promenade

Visit Central Park, Rockefeller Center (go to the top), The 9/11 Memorial, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square.

Use the subway or walk. Taxis are quite high so skip them. Skip the shopping because it's too expensive. Stick to local eateries, delis, or fast food to save money.

Go into a taxi and tell the cabbie to follow a random car. Get a hof dog of a street vendor. If you see a old guy feeding pigeons go and shoo the birds away and start picking up the bread crumbs lol (if you do the last one don't hurt the birds)

You give no clues as to what you might like to see or do, so we can't really help you. There are plenty of travel guidebooks for NYC at your library, or you can use Internet resources.

FYI: $500 might get you through one DAY in NYC - certainly not a week!
