there are many ways to open an exe file, either you can use a ready-made registry script, do it manually or convert the exe to the file format it originally is:
1. with a readymade registry, you just doenload it run it and problem is solved
http://media.askvg.com/downloads/2008/03/Fix-EXE-F...
2. if you wish to do it manually
>> go to start > type command in run box
>> type
cd\windows
>> now open registry editor typing
regedit
>> go to the key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
change the default key value to exe file
>> go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
change default key value to
"%1" %*
>> restart windows and you can open exe files
3. you can use softwares to convert the exe files like

It is not fixed through the registry. You have carelessly used File/Open with and opened an exe in Notepad with the tick box for "always use this program to open this type of files turned on". since Microsoft do not consider anyone can ever make that mistake they do not provide a fix for it, and it involves so many changes to the registry itself that you can never find all the entries to fix it. There are supposed fixes posted, EVERY one of them is destructive, people posting them because they know nothing on the machine will work correctly. The only answer is to create a new account on the machine, make sure it is an admin account. Then log in to that account and you can delete the original user but make sure you select keep files. This saves the whole profile of the original user. Restart and then log in again. Then you need to go to that user's folder and right click it, select properties, then security. In the advanced section you can select to take ownership of it and ensure you select to include all sub folders and files. Also give yourself full control on them. You can then enter the folder and use select all. Right click one of the selected files and click copy, then enter your own user folder and right click a blank space and select paste. you will get messages about overwriting existing folders and files, always select the do this for all other files each time. There will be some profile files which will refuse to copy, tell it to skip them as theses are protected system files and that prevents copying user profile errors over including the incorrect extension opening in Notepad.. When you are sure you have all the files you need you an delete the original user folder.
